The 2026 World Cup is upon us and set to take place across three countries for the first time in its history. Canada, Mexico and the USA will host teams from across the world with the final set to be played in New Jersey. For those looking to brush up on their Football knowledge, here are some key terms and tournament information to know before 39 days of non-stop entertainment.
How is the Tournament Structured?
The 48 teams are split into twelve groups of four, where the top two teams in each group will advance to the Last 32, as well as the eight best third-placed teams.
At this stage, the teams play a one-off game with the winner advancing to the next round. The teams left in the tournament half each time until only two teams are left.
The final two will then meet on the fringes of New York City to decide who will be crowned World Champions.
New Rules for the 2026 World Cup
It is clear there is an emphasis on keeping the game flowing this year, with several forms of time-wasting targeted by the new rule changes. Goal kicks and throw-ins must now be taken within 5 seconds, or the opposing team will be handed possession.
In another attempt to prevent time-wasting, players will have just ten seconds to leave the field when substituted. If they exceed this time, the player coming onto the field must wait one full minute, leaving their team a player down.
The rule changes have also expanded the remit of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) ensuring fair results throughout the tournament. VAR will now be able to review second yellow cards and incorrect corner decisions. More information on VAR and how this affects your bet can be found here.
